Cycling Holidays in France - Chez les Bons

Chez Les Bons

Chez les Bons is a beautiful 200yr old Charentais farmhouse that sits near the east bank of the Gironde between Bordeaux and La Rochelle. The house is perfectly set up to welcome groups of friends or families.

We spend the days cycling around the beautiful Charente countryside that is covered in vineyards and sunflowers. We will visit towns such as La Rochelle, Cognac and Saintes and spend time on Ile de Ré and in the Médoc.

Nearer by are the gorgeous villages of Talmont, Mortagne and Meursac.

All routes are agreed according to the wishes and ability of the group.

Chez les Bons has three very large bedrooms (6mx5m) two of which are en suite and there is a third bathroom downstairs.

The maximum capacity is nine people across the three rooms.

By Car

Mark Williams will be taking his car and can take 1-2 members and their bikes/luggage. Depending on numbers, price will be in the region of £150-200 per person all in.
Contact Mark if you are interested in this travel option.

Friday 25 May: leave London at about 7pm and drive to Portsmouth to take the 10.45pm sailing to Caen, which arrives at 6.45am on Saturday.  Berth with ensuite booked for a good night’s sleep.  About 4.5 hours drive to Chez les Bons.

Saturday 2 June: leave Chez les Bons in the late afternoon and drive to Caen to take the 11pm sailing to Portsmouth, which arrives at 6.45am on Sunday. Berth with ensuite booked for a good night’s sleep.  Drop-off in London.

The nearest airports are Bordeaux and La Rochelle, both of which are about an hour away from the house.

The nearest train station is Saintes which is about 30 mins away.

You take the TGV to Angoulême and change there on to a local train.

By Bike

Gerard Veglio and Gavin Simmons both cycled down this year and really enjoyed the trip.

From the airport/station to Chez les Bons

To make the best use of everyone's time, it is necessary to coordinate arrival times in one place.

If it's a big group it will be easier to all get the same flight.

I will happily pick people up as I have a large car which can take 6 people. I can attach a trailer and put all luggage and any bikes in that. If there are more than 6 people then a small hire car will be needed and I will take any excess luggage/bikes in the trailer.

Bike Hire

I have found a local company that hires good quality road bikes so this can be organised on request.

Breakfast is included in the price. This will be bread and croissants from the local boulangerie, with coffee, juice and fruits, so enough to set up for a morning's riding.

Lunch will be on the road. We can either stop at a restaurant or get sandwiches from a boulangerie.

Dinner has three options.

1) Cook together at the house (€10-15 each). We can do a big shop on arrival.

2) Eat at local restaurants (€25-30 + drinks each).

3) Ask caterers to come to the house (will be the most expensive)

Bed & Breakfast and Guiding: €30 pppd

Airport pick up and drop off: €80 for the car for each trip

There is an Easyjet flight out at 08.15 from Gatwick to Bordeaux and a return at 21.45 the following Saturday which works well – currently costs approx. £250.

NB There are other options, however the Saturday early morning flight out must be taken so hire bikes can be picked up in the afternoon.

Estimate €30/day if eating out every lunch and at home in the evening.

Estimate €55/day if eating out every lunch and dinner.

This will depend on how much alcohol is consumed!

The website has more details of the house and area:

It would be great if you could like and share it please!

The instagram page shows some of the rides (and pies!) from this summer:

There is also a four day option with flights out on a Thursday evening after work and then back on the Monday evening so you would get 4 days of cycling!
